It has been years since we all had the chance to play a complete X-Men game, excluding the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series and the ones that are solely based on Wolverine. This year, Activision has given us X-Men: Destiny, a good game which is seriously lacking in the graphics department.
The concept of the game sounded interesting i.e. allowing players to make their own choices and deciding if they wanted to follow the X-Men philosophy or the Brotherhood philosophy. I was intrigued to hear that the game will be introducing three characters having different backgrounds that have discovered they were mutants. It felt similar to the story; Magma went thorough in X-Men: Legends. The game allowed its players to make choices and mold the story of the game in the way they want. Predictably enough, I rushed out and bought the game when it released in September and I was disappointed.
First of all I was disappointed by the graphics that were nowhere near the level of PS3 and Xbox360, the consoles this game was released on. I felt as if I was playing a game that was a slightly improved version of a PS2 game. I was expecting something spectacular, but the graphics of X-Men: Destiny weren’t even near the level of the Ultimate Alliance series. I looked past this fact and told myself that the gameplay might be better. But in that department, this game failed. The whole fighting mechanism is on the “Button mashing” system which gets boring after a few minutes. The “core power” concept felt good but it still couldn’t provide what I was expecting. The whole X-Men “four man team system” is nowhere in this game and it’s just the player alone who’s fighting the bad guys, that come in droves, with occasional help from other X-Men characters. The map system is the same as seen in RE5 and the Dragon Age series, a system that makes games easy to play as said in my previous posts.
The choice of characters introduced in the game was not well thought out. I mean, where were Storm, Jean, Rouge and other beloved characters form the franchise? Though the players have the choice to choose, the missions and the story ending doesn’t differ greatly, regardless of the team the player sides with.
In a nutshell, this game looked as something half-developed that Activision would release just to make a quick dollar. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t buy this game. You should give it a chance as it allows X-Men fans to escape into the world they like. I’m just saying that don’t have high expectations form it.
Alas! I wait again for a real X-Men game that takes the fun of the X-Men: Legends series to a new and better level. I will keep you all posted with any news I get my hands on regarding the next X-Men game installment.
